{Strategies For Managing Change} - How to overcome resistance to change

Hi

This message contains graphics. For a better viewing experience online - click here

I don't know about you, but when I come across someone who has been instrumental in leading 5 successful major change initiatives back-to-back over 7 years, I pay close attention!

The client companies were UK based: Nationwide, National Savings, Liverpool City Council, Lloyds of London and Friends Provident.

The man who led the team that found the key to overcoming organisational resistance to change, and that delivered these successes, is Neil Farmer of Informal Networks Ltd.

The secret of his team's success? Identifying and working through the informal networks and "natural leaders" within each organisation, that existed largely outside of the formal "command and control" management structures. For more on this see the first of 2 featured articles: "Putting People First"

Continuing with the theme of finding and developing the hidden talent within organisations, author and subscriber to this ezine David Froom says that:

"For decades, corporations have stifled innovation from within their ranks through an underlying culture that promotes and rewards conforming behavior."

David has 16 years experience consulting to medium and large organizations.

During this time he made a study of the talent within the ranks and the reasons why people rarely tell their employers about their ideas. He found that the reasons fell into 3 possible categories:

(1) They would probably receive very little, if any compensation for their ideas when implemented

(2) The idea could be stolen by another employee

(3) Job security could be at risk through the employee becoming involved in areas outside of their position description

David's book The Thinking Corporation provides a solution to these issues. For more on this see the second of our 2 featured articles: "Identify Your Organizations Ability to Think"

I look forward to your feedback on this.

Best Wishes
Stephen

Doing Homework or Research?

PDF Research Tools & Recommended Free Third Party Resources

I frequently get emails from people asking for material on very specific aspects of change management, so if you are a student or a researcher or just interested in finding more in depth information then I recommend the PDF research tools that are now available on the site.

Unlike a typical google search that will produce a listing of websites deemed relevant to the search words, these tools search on PDF documents located within websites.

Given that some of the "best" data on websites is stored within PDFs that are not easily accessed, these search tools will reveal a host of new (and largely free) data in the form of articles, research, interviews and other publications. Why not try it now - just enter a search word or phrase and see what it reveals.

    The tools are here:

8 Brief Lessons Based on the Practitioners’ Masterclass

If you are looking to survive change and if you want to benefit from another man's experience there's no need to look any further - I have been there:

  • I have delivered large messy projects. Hit targets. Pushed through unpopular measures. Sacked people. Made people cry. Been reduced to tears myself.

  • I have lived through management reins of terror. Worked for tyrannical numbers-obsessed bosses. Built teams. Implemented strategy. Won friends in business and influenced people.

  • In short, I've been there, seen it and done it - the good the bad and the ugly. I know what works and what doesn't - and why I have the scars to prove it.

Based extensively on the highly commended "Practitioners' Masterclass" and the "Practitioners' Quick Guide" you will learn and be guided through everything you need to know about surviving change in 8 brief lessons.
