Certification is a confirmation of an individual's technical competencies but the possession of certification does not automatically imply or confer the level of practical and applied experience or skill of the individual. Furthermore there are many organisations providing Six Sigma training - as this is now a "gravy train" for consultancies and training companies - so certification with one organisation does not automatically imply total transferability to another environment with a different employer.
What is Six Sigma training?As you might expect, Six Sigma certification involves learning the relevant subject matter, passing an exam, and demonstrating a degree of competency in a field environment. The basic training materials are public domain and available from innumerable training organisations - invariably packaged up with the training company's "proprietary" classroom environment training. Where the divergence of training standards (and thus the limitations of the transferable value of the certification) occurs is with constitutes an acceptable level of "in the field/hands on" applied practical competency. To put it bluntly, it varies from one organisation to the next!
One organisation that does attempt to provide a standardised approach to six sigma certification is the LSSSA - which claims to be "the world's leading membership organization devoted to Lean Six Sigma".
The LSSA describes itself as: "targeting to be the only authorized entity for issuing Lean Six Sigma Certifications. The need for a single entity to supervise and monitor the training and projects standards for Lean and Six Sigma is now more important than ever... we have taken the responsibility of creating a standard for the combination of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. After many years of work we have been able to develop the first standard body of knowledge covering the main topics of both methodologies under the name of: LSS BoK V0.1.
